Color

Azurite-Malachite should have distinct patches of bright blue and pure green that are well-defined and randomly distributed around the sphere. Beware of manufactured Azurite-Malachite. These non-therapeutic beads consist of pieces of Azurite and Malachite assembled and glued together. Telltale signs of manufacturing are geometrically shaped patches of blue and green and the presence of bands in the Malachite. It is impossible for Malachite to grow bands when also surrounded by Azurite in nature.

Clarity

Azurite-Malachite is an opaque stone. The finest therapeutic-quality gems are simply blue and green. White dots and small patches of brown Tenorite or shiny Pyrite may also be present. All these minerals should be in minimal quantities. However, their presence can support other evidence that the Azurite-Malachite is natural.

The Physical Characteristics of Azurite-Malachite

Malachite and Azurite are distinct minerals that often occur separately in nature — but they can also grow very closely together. Despite their strikingly different colors — the rich green of Malachite and the deep blue of Azurite — both are copper carbonate minerals, and their chemical formulas are remarkably similar: Malachite: Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂ Azurite: Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂ Cu = Copper CO3 = Carbonate (OH)2 = Hydroxide The differences between them are subtle but meaningful. Malachite gets its green color from a form of copper known as Cu₂, while Azurite's deep blue comes from a slightly different form, Cu₃. Azurite also contains two carbonate molecules to Malachite's one.
